Article কাকে বলেঃ A, An এবং The কে article বলে। কার্য ও উৎপত্তি অনুযায়ী ইহারা সাধারণত: adjective হিসেবে পরিগণিত হয়। কারণ ইহারা Noun কে qualify (নির্দেশ) করে। তবে adjective এর সাথে article এর পার্থক্য রয়েছে। যেমন:-

i. Adjective এর degree of comparison আছে কিন্তু article এর degree of comparison নেই।

ii. অধিকাংশ Adjective predicate verb এর পরে বসতে পারে। কিন্তু article predicate হিসেবে বসতে পারে না।

Article দুই প্রকার।

i) Indefinite

ii) Definite

Indefinite Article

A এবং An কে Indefinite Article বলে কারণ তারা কোন অনির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি, প্রাণী ও বস্তুকে বুঝায়। Singular Countable Noun এর পূর্বে a/an বসে। অর্থগত দিক থেকে a এবং an এর মধ্যে কোন পার্থক্য নেই। তবে ব্যবহারের দিক থেকে ইহাদের মধ্যে কোন পার্থক্য নেই। তবে ব্যবহারের দিক থেকে ইহাদের মধ্যে পার্থক্য রয়েছে। যেমন:

He bought a pen.

The boy took an egg.

Definite Article

The কে Definite Article বলে কারণ ইহা এক বা একাধিক বস্তু বা প্রাণীকে নির্দিষ্ট করে বুঝায়। Definite Article, Singular এবং Plural উভয় প্রকার Noun এর পূর্বে বসে।

যেমন: The boy took the eggs.

USES OF A & AN

1. সাধারণত শব্দের শুরুতে consonant থাকলে তার পূর্বে a এবং vowel (a, e, i, o u) থাকলে তার পূর্বে an বসে। যেমন: a hen, a boy, a pen, an egg, an apple.

2. যদি শব্দের প্রথম অক্ষর h থাকে এবং তা যদি উচ্চারিত হয় তবে তার পূর্বে a বসে এবং h উচ্চারিত না হলে তার পূর্বে an বসে। wa: a horse, a historian, an honest man, an hour.

3. শব্দের শুরুতে যদি vowel বা vowels থাকে এবং তা যদি ইউ (u) এর মত উচ্চরিত হয় তারপূর্বে a বসে। a ewe, a European, a uniform, a university, a useful metal, a unique position.

4. O দিয়ে গঠিত সমস্ত শব্দের পূর্বে an বসে। শুধুমাত্র One যুক্ত শব্দের পূর্বে a বসে। an open field, an open heart surgery, an opera, an orange, a one taka note, a one eyed man.

5. সংক্ষিপ্ত শব্দের (abbreviation) প্রথম অক্ষর Vowel- এর মত উচ্চারিত হলে তার পূর্বে an বসে। an M.A., an F,R,C,S. an F. C. P.S। কিন্তু সংক্ষিত শব্দের (abbreviation)

প্রথম অক্ষর Consonant এর মত উচ্চারিত হলে তার পূর্বে a বসে। যেমন: a B.A. a B.A.G. a B.Sc.

OTHER USES OFA & AN

1. এক জাতীয় সকলকে বুঝাতে Singular common noun এর পূর্বে indefinite article (a/an বসে। যেমন: a dog is a fathful animal, an ant is industrious.

2. নির্দিষ্ট কোন ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে না বুঝিয়ে একটি ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু কে বুঝায় এমন Noun এর পূর্বে Indefinite Article(a/an বসে। যেমন: He bought an ice cream, I live in a tiny room.

3. The same (একই). The certain (কোন এক) ইত্যাদি অর্থ প্রকাশ করতে Singular common noun এর পূর্বে (a/an) বসে। যেমন: Criminals are of a (the same) character. They are men of a (the same) profession. There lived a (a certain) king.

4. কখনও কখনও Preposition অর্থে a ব্যবহৃত হয়, তখন সেই “a” কে Disguised Preposition বলে। যেমনঃ the king wint a (on) hunting.

5. Plural Noun এর পূর্বে few, little, good, good many, lot of, great, many, good deal ইত্যাদি ব্যবহৃত হলে তাদের পূর্বেও "a" বসে। যেমন: He earns a lot of money. There is a little water in the glass. There are a few apples on the table. He lived a great many years. King Solomon had a great deal of money.

6. সংখ্যাবাচক expression যেমন: couple, dozen, score (20), hundred. Thousand million, এর পূর্বে "a" বসে। যেমন: He earns a hundred taka a day. They sod a dozen pens. At least a million of people attended the meeting. Exclamation বুঝাতে what, how such ইত্যাদির পরে (a/an) বসে। যেমন: Such a long queue, what a pretty girl, How nice a bird. ইত্যাদি।

7. কিছু কিচু Phrase এর পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমন: In a body, in a hurry, in a nutshell, in a fix, in a temper, to take an interest.

8. Singular common noun এর পূর্বে quite, many, rather, but, more, not ব্যবহৃত হলে সে noun এর পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমন: Gulliver's Travels is quite an interesting book. Mr. Khan is rather a gentleman. You are but a child. Not a rickshaw is seen on the road.

9. Adjective- এর পূর্বে so, too ইত্যাদি থাকলে ইহাদের পরে a/an বসে। যেমন: This is too serious a matter for him to overlook. Iron is so useful a metal. The horse is so faithful an animal.

10. তুলনা অর্থে Proper noun যখন Common noun হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন ইহার পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমন: Nelson Mendela is an Abraham Lincoln in his ideals. I see you are a Wordsworth.

11. Abstract Noun যখন Common Noun- রুপে ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন তার পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমন: Helen was a beauty.

12. Many এবং such এর পরে Singular common Noun ব্যবহৃত হলে ইহার পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমন: Many a boy was present in the meeting.

13. Mr/Mrs/Miss- এর পূর্বে a বসে। যেমন: A Mr. Rahman called at my office. A Mrs. Shamima sought his help.

OMMISSION OF A/AN

1. খাবারের (Meals) পূর্বে a/an বসে না। তবে খাবারের (Meals) পূর্বে Adjective বসলে a/an বসে।

Incorrect: we have a breakfast at 7 am.

Correct: We have breakfast at 7 am.

Incorrect: we had good breakfast yesterday.

Correct: We had a good breakfast yesterday.

2. Plural Noun - এর পূর্বে a/an বসে না। যেমন: Roses are beautiful. Horses are useful.

3. Uncountable Noun হিসেবে গণ্য advice, information, news baggage, luggage ইত্যাদি এর পূর্বে a/an বসে না। যেমন: My teacher gave me good advice. The police failed to get correct information regarding the murder.

4. Water, milk, oil, ink hydrogen, tea paper, ইত্যাদি uncountable noun এর পূর্বে a/an বসে না। যেমন: We write on paper, we take tea. Milk is nutritious food. তবে uncountable noun এস সঙ্গে কিছু measure Words (পরিমাপ করা যায় এমন শব্দ) যোগ করা হলে তাদের পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমন: Give me a glass of water.

5. Abstract Noun এর পূর্বে a/an বসে না। যেমন: Kindness is a great virtue.

USES OF DEFINITE ARTICLE

1. নির্দিষ্ট করে বুঝায় এমন Common Noun এর Singular ও Plural উভয় Number এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The boys are playing. The girl is reading.এক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহৃত The কে Defining “The” বলে।

2. এক জাতীয় সকলকে বুজাতে Singular Common Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The cow is a useful animal. The rose is a nice flower. এ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত The কে Generalising “The” বলে। এ অর্থে The এর পরিবর্তে প্রদত্ত Common Noun টির Plural 13915 SITI The horse is a faithful animal or A horse is a faithful animal or Horses are faithful animals. মানবজাতি বুঝাতে The বসে না।

Incorrect: The man is mortal.

Correct: Man is mortal.

3. নদী, সাগর, উপসাগর, মহাসাগর, পর্বতশ্রেণী, দ্বীপপুঞ্জ, জাহাজ ইত্যাদি নামের পূর্বে The বসে।। যেমন: The Andamans, the Himalayas, The Pacific ইত্যাদি। কিন্তু একটি মাত্র পর্বত ও দ্বীপ বুঝালে তার পূর্বে The বসে না।যেমন: Sandwip, Hatia, Mount Everest.

4. ধর্মগ্রন্থ ও পত্রিকার নামের পূর্বে The বসে।

যেমনঃ The holy Quran. The observer.

5. একক বস্তু যেমন:- পৃথিবী, সূর্য, চন্দ্র, পূর্ব, পশ্চিম, উত্তর, দক্ষিণ ইত্যাদি শব্দের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The earth, the moon, এক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহৃত The কে Familiar “The” বলে।

6. বর্ণনামূলক বা অর্থপূর্ণ ভোগলিক নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The U.S.A, The U.K.

7. তারিখের নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The 10th of November.

8. Possessive Adjective –এর পরিবর্তে Common Noun এর ক্ষেত্রে The ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: He Struck me on the (my) head. The teacher pulled the boy by the (his) ear.

9. জাতি ও সম্প্রদায়ের নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The English. The rich. The poor. Note: জাতি সম্প্রদায় Plural Common Noun হয়এবং তার পরে Plural Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়।

10. Superlative Degree- এর Adjective এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ He is the best boy in the class.

11. দুইয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝাতে Adjective এর coparative Degree এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: Ruba is the better of the two girls.

12. যত তত বুঝাতে Adverb রুপে ব্যবহৃত coparative Degree এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The sooner the better.

13. যে সকল Noun দ্বারা বৃত্তি বা পেশা বুঝায় সেই Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: He joined the army.

14. Ordinal number যখন অক্ষর দ্বারা লেখা হয় তখন তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: Edward the seventh. George the sixth. Note: ordinal number যখন Roman figure দ্বারা লেখা হয় তখন ordinal number এর পূর্বে The লিখতে হয় না। কিন্তু পড়ার সময় The পড়তে ডয়। যেমন: Omar ii (Omar the second).

15. কোন Abstract quality বুঝাতে উক্ত Adjective এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: People love the brave.

16. কোন নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর বুঝাতে Abstract Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The courage of Richard is known to all.

17. Common Noun বা Adjective যখন Abstract Idea বুঝায় তখন উক্ত Common Noun বা Adjective এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The mother (motherly affection) rose in her.

18. একই গুণসম্পন্ন দুই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর সহিত তুলনা করা হলে যার সাথে তুলনা করা হয় তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: Nazrul is the Shelley of Bengal.

19. Material Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে না। তবে তবে কোন নির্দিষ্ট স্থানের বা নির্দিষ্ট স্থানের বা নির্দিষ্ট প্রকারের পদার্থ বুঝালে Material Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The perfume of Saudi Arabia is famous.

20. প্রসিদ্ধ ঐতিহাসিক নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: Ibrahim Lodi was defeated in the battle of Panipath.

21. Proper Noun এর পূর্বে Adjective থাকলে উক্ত Adjective পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The great Omar was the second Caliph of Islam.

22. Singular designation (পদবী/ উপাধি) এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The President, the Prime Minister.

23. কোন Noun বা যখন Superlative এর ঘুরূত্ব বুঝায় তখন তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: Michael Jackson is the singer of the day.

24. Plural পরিবারের নামের পূর্বে The বসে। wa: The Mujghals, The Pathans, The Khans.

25. কোন Adjective/ Adjective Phrase বা Adjective Clause 'দ্বারা কোন Common Noun কে নির্দিষ্ট করা হলে তার পূর্বে The বসে। Qa: The man who came here yesterday is my friend. The man in white dress is known to me.

26. সংখ্যা প্রকাশক যে word একটা unit অর্থে বসে, যেমন: He sells mangoes by the hundred. The man buys eggs by the score.

বিঃদ্রঃ By the dozens, by the scores, by the hundreds বলা হয়।

27. Proper Noun এর পরে কোন epithet (গুনবাচক শুব্দ) যুক্ত হইলে সেই epithet এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: Alexander, the great was a brave warrior.

28. Musical instruments এর পূর্বে The বসে। Hae: He plays the piano.

29. Choir. Orchestra এবং Pop group এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The Miles. The Abba.

30. দুই বা ততোধিক অবিবাহিত বোনের নিকট লিখিত টিঠির উপর একত্রে সম্বোধন করলে তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: Structure: The Misses + Surname: The Misses Khan.

31. কিছু Phrase এর পূর্বে The বসে। 4: He is on the bank of ruin. I am in the wrong.

32. কতিপয় Collective Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: Rhe elite, the peasantry, the audience.

33. Adjective যুক্ত কতিপয় Proper Noun বা Noun+ Preposition+ Proper Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: The national zoo at Mirpur, the National Science museum, the fort of Lalbag.

OMISSION OF ARTICLE

1. বিখ্যাত গ্রন্থের লেখকের নাম গ্রন্থের পূবে থাকলে The বসে না। কিন্তু লেখকের নাম পূর্বে না থাকলে The বসে। যেমন: The Agnibina of Nazrul or Nazrul's Agnibina.

2. Bed, mosque, church, hospital, prison, school, college, university, court ইত্যাদি স্থানগুলো যদি সাধারণ অর্থে (Primary purpose) ব্যবহৃত হয় বা পরিদর্শন করা হয় তখন এদের পূর্বে The বসে না। After I leave school, I want to go to college (as a student). Mr Rahim is in prison for a murder (as a prisoner) Mr. Karim goes to mosque on Friday (normally a muslim goes to mosque) কিন্তু উপরোক্ত স্থানগুলো যখন বিশেষ উদ্দেশ্যে পরিদর্শন করা ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন এদের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: Mr Khan went to the school to meet his son's teacher (not as a pupil). Mr Rahim went to the prison to see Karim. (as a visitor, not as a prisoner.)

3. Home এর পূর্বে যদি descriptive word বা Phrase ব্যবহৃত হলে home এর পূর্বে The বসে না।যেমন: We went home. He is at home. কিন্তু home শব্দটির পূর্বে description Word বা Phrase ব্যবহৃত হলে home এর পূর্বে The বসে।

যেমন: We arrived at the bride's home. For some four or five years this was the home for the queen.

4. ঋতুর নামের পূর্বে the বসালেও চলে না বসালেও চলে। যেমন: The rain has set in. It dews in winter.

5. রাস্তা, এ্যভিনিউ, স্কয়ার, পার্কের নামের পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমন: In the morning I go to Bahadurshah park. He bought a shop in park Street. কিন্তু রাস্তার নামের শেষে riad শব্দটির উল্লেখ থাকলে তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: He bought a shop on the Mirpur Road.

6. সাধারণত: Proper, Abstract. Material ও plural Common Noun পূর্বে The বসে না।যেমন: Dhaka is a populous city. Forgiveness is a great virtue. Iron is a useful metal cows given us milk. কিন্তু plural Common Noun faina নির্দিষ্ট করে বুঝালে তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন4: The women in the fall are all in red share. The flowers in his garden (not flowers in general) are fine. Note: proper Noun এর পূর্বে পদবী বাচক শব্দ থাকলে তার পূর্বে The বসে। pa: The poet Narul is our prid. The caliph Omar was a great ruler.

Abstract Noun দ্বারা গুণ না বুঝিয়ে এ গুণ বিমিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বুঝালে অথবা ঐ গুণের ধরণ বুঝালে উক্ত Abstract Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে এবং তার plural ও হতে পারে। যেমন: Nazrul is the glory of Bangladesh. The crimes committed by the rulers are unpardonable.

7. Proper Noun এর পূর্বে Common Noun বসে যদি তা Adjective রুপে কাজ করে তবে তার পূর্বে Article বসে না। যেমন: Prinicipal Jalaluddin was a man of Strict Principles.

8. Pronominal Adjective ও Numeral Adjective যখন কোন Common Noun কে qualify করে তখন উক্ত Common Noun পূর্বে The বসে না। (34: This is my Book. Each boy has a separate room.

9. Rank (পদবী) Profession (পেশা) জাতীয় Common Noun যখন কোন Proper Noun এর Apposition রূপে ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন তার পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমন: Dr. Enamul Haque, vice-Chancellor of Jahangir Nagar University, was a scholar.

10. সম্বোধন পদরুপে ব্যবহৃত Common Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমন: Boys, you are the future leaders of the country.

11. ভাষার নামের পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমন: English is an international language. কিন্তু ভাষার পরে Lanuage শব্দটি থাকলে উক্ত ভাষার পূর্বে The ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: The English is very interesting to learn.

12. হ্রদের নামের পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমন: Lake Superior. Lade Baikal. Lade Caspian.

13. দিন বা মাসের নামের পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমন: Sunday, March.

14. রোগের নামের পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমন: Cholera has Broken Out in the village.

ব্যতিক্রম: The gout. The Measles. The mumps.

15. Factitive verb যেমন: nominate, elect select. make, appoint ,crown, choose প্রভৃতি verb গুলোর Complement এর পূর্বে Article বসে না। যেমন: We made him chairman. They elected me captain. কিন্তু Complement টি নির্দিষ্ট করে বুঝালে তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: We made him the captain of the team.

16. Allah or God এর নামের পূর্বে Article বসে না। যেমন: Allah has created this earth.

17. শরীরের অঙ্গ-প্রতঙ্গ এবং পোশাক-পরিচ্ছেদ ইত্যাদির পূর্বে The বসে না। কারণ তারা Possessive Adjective। যেমন: Raise your left hand. He took off his shirt.

18. খেলার নামের পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমনঃ He plays football.

19. Possessive Case এর পরে কোন Noun থাকলে তার পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমন: It is my book.

20. প্রশণ সম্পর্কিত যানবাহন বা ভ্রমন পথের পূর্বে Article বসে না। যেমন: By bus. By train.

21. Phrase এ ব্যবহৃত কোন কোন Singular common noun এর পূর্বে article বসে না।। যেমন: Learn by heart. Take offence.

REPETITION OF ARTICLES

1. দুই বা ততোধিক Adjective যদি একই Noun কে qualify করে তখন প্রথম Noun টির পূর্বে Article বসে। যেমন: He has a red and white horse.

কিন্তু দুই বা ততোধিক Adjective যদি একই Noun কে qualify না করে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন Noun কে qualify করে তাহলে প্রত্যেকটি Noun এর পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমন: I have a red horse and a white horse.

2. দু'টি Noun and দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়ে একই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে নির্দেশ করলে প্রথম Noun- এর পূর্বে The বসে। কিন্তু যদি Noun দুটি দ্বারা ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু বুঝায় তাহলে উভয় Noun এর পূর্বে The এবং তখন Verb Plural হয়। যেমন: The Headmaster and secretary is present in meeting (একই ব্যক্তি)। The Headmaster and the Secretary are present in meeting. (ভিন্ন ব্যক্তি)

3. Singular Noun - এর পূর্বে দুই বা ততোধিক Adjective থাকলে ইহাদের প্রত্যেকটির পূর্বে The বসে। কিন্তু Noun টি Plural হলে শুধু প্রথম Adjective- টির পূর্বে The বসে। যেমন: I have read the fourth and the fifth chapter of the book.

4. অনেক সময় Article প্রযোগে অর্থের পরিবর্তন হয়ে যায়। যেমন: few বলতে প্রায় কিছুই বুঝায় না। a few বলতে অল্প সংখ্যক বুঝায় এবং The few বলতে খুব অল্প সংখ্যক তবে সবগুলো বুঝায়।

যেমন: I have a few books. I have few books. I have the few books. আর Little বলতে প্রায় কিছুই (পরিমাণ) বুঝায় না। A little বলতে সামান্য পরিমাণ বুঝায় এবং the little বলতে সামান্য পরিমাণ তবে তার সবটুকুই বুঝায়। যেমন: I have little rice. I have a little rice. I have the little rice.

5. তুলনা বুঝাতে দুটি Noun যদি একই ব্যক্তিকে নিদের্ম করে তাহলে প্রথম Noun টির পূর্বে article বসে। কিন্তু Noun দুটি যদি দুটি ভিন্ন ব্যক্তিকে নির্দেশ করে তবে প্রত্যেকটি object এর পূর্বে article বসে। যেমন: She is a better singer than dancer. She is a better singer than a dancer.

Article এর বিস্তারিত নিয়ম

1. Uncountable noun এর সাথে no article (×) বসে।

× Temperature is measured in degrees. × Money makes the world go around.

2. Plural nouns এর সাথে no article (×) বসে।

× Volcanoes are formed by pressure under the earth’s surface.

3. Singular nouns এর সাথে ‘the/a/an’ বসে।

The computer is a marvelous invention. The elephant lives in family groups.

Note: 1. যে Noun গণনা করা যায় তাকে countable noun বলে। যেমন: pen, cow, dog ইত্যাদি।

2. যে Noun গণনা করা যায় না তাকে uncountable noun বলে। যেমন: air, water, rice, gold ইত্যাদি।

(i) যদি কোনো প্রাণী, শরীরের অঙ্গ, গাছপালা, বাদ্যযন্ত্র ও জটিল আবিষ্কার এর ক্ষেত্রে প্রদত্ত তথ্য সবার জন্য প্রযোজ্য হয় তবে আমরা প্রায়ই the + singular noun ব্যবহার করি। কিন্তু সাধারণ জড় বস্তুর ক্ষেত্রে তথ্যটি সবার জন্য প্রযোজ্য হলে আমরা No article + plural noun ব্যবহার করি।

The cow is a domestic animal but the tiger is not. The cow helps us in many ways.

× Books also help us to increase our knowledge.

(ii) ‘man’ শব্দটি মানবজাতি বুঝালে আমরা ‘man’ এর সাথে কোনো article ব্যবহার করি না।

Man is mortal.

অনেকের মধ্যে একজন বা কিছুর জন্য প্রযোজ্য

নিচের পাঠ্যাংশটি মনোযোগ দিয়ে পড়:

One day I met a lame boy. After talking for a while he showed me an identity card. Seeing the identity card I came to know that he was a university student.

পাঠ্যাংশে ব্যবহৃত ‘boy, card এবং student’ শব্দগুলো Singular countable এবং অনেকের মধ্যে একটি/ একজন বুঝায়। এর পূর্বে article 'a' ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।

আবার নিচের পাঠ্যাংশটি মনোযোগ দিয়ে পড়:

We were returning home. On the way we met a little girl. The girl was selling × flowers on the street. She was also selling × water.

পাঠ্যাংশে ব্যবহৃত ‘flowers’ শব্দটি Plural countable এবং অনেকের মধ্যে কয়েকটি বুঝায়। আবার, ‘water’ শব্দটি Uncountable noun এবং কিছু বুঝায়। এর পূর্বে কোনো article ব্যবহার করা হয়নি।

তাই, অনেকের মধ্যে একটি বা অনেকের মধ্যে কিছু বুঝাতে:

Rule:

4. Uncountable noun এর সাথে no article (×) বসে। তবে Uncountable noun এর পূর্বে Adjective থাকলে ঐ Adjective এর পূর্বে a/an বসে।

Our science class mixed × boric acid with × water today.

This day is celebrated in an enthusiastic atmosphere.

5. Plural nouns এর সাথে no article (×) বসে।

We’re happy when people bring × cookies!

6. Singular nouns এর সাথে 'a/an' বসে।

Bring an umbrella if it looks like rain. You’ll need a visa to stay for more than ninety days.

কিভাবে বুঝবে সবখানে সবার জন্য প্রযোজ্য না অনেকের মধ্যে একজন বা কিছুর জন্য প্রযোজ্য?

এটা বুঝার জন্য ‘All + noun + everywhere’ শব্দটি ব্যবহার করলে যদি অর্থ ঠিক থাকে তবে ধরে নিতে হবে সবখানে সবার জন্য প্রযোজ্য। কিন্তু অর্থ ঠিক না থাকলে ধরে নিতে হবে অনেকের মধ্যে এক বা কিছুর জন্য প্রযোজ্য।

The cow lives on grass. — ‘‘All cows everywhere” live on grass. (এখানে অর্থ পরিবর্তন হয়নি).

A cow gave birth to a calf last night. —‘‘All cows everywhere” gave birth to a calf last night. (এখানে অর্থ পরিবর্তন হয়েছে যা ঘটা সম্ভব নয়।)

নির্দিষ্ট একজন (একটি)/ কিছু

নিচের পাঠ্যাংশটি মনোযোগ দিয়ে পড়:

We met a boy at railway station. The boy is an orphan. He was sitting with some flowers and water to sell. The flowers were very fresh but it seems to me the water was not pure.

পাঠ্যাংশটিতে ব্যবহৃত ‘boy, flowers and water’ শব্দগুলো নির্দিষ্ট। কারণ এগুলো পূর্বে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে। এর পূর্বে article ‘the’ ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।

তাই নির্দিষ্ট একজন (একটি)/ কিছু বুঝাতে:

Rule:

7. অধিকাংশ Proper noun এর পূর্বে no article (×) বসে।

My research will be conducted in × Luxembourg.

8. Uncountable nouns এর পূর্বে 'the' বসে।

Step two: mix the water with the boric acid. The laughter of my children is contagious.

9. Plural noun এর পূর্বে 'the' বসে।

We recruited the nurses from General Hospital. The projects described in your proposal will be fully funded.

10. Singular noun এর পূর্বে 'the' বসে।

Bring the umbrella in my closet if it looks like rain. Did you get the visa you applied for?

কিভাবে বুঝব ‘নির্দিষ্ট একজন বা কিছু’

(i) যার দ্বিতীয়টি নেই

The earth rotates around the sun.

(ii) শ্রোতা ও বক্তা যখন বুঝতে পারে কাকে বুঝানো হচ্ছে

The boss just asked about the report. Meet me in the parking lot after the show.

(iii) প্রথমবার উল্লেখসহ দ্বিতীয়বার উল্লেখ করা হলে

I found a good handout on English articles. The handout is available in online. You can get a giant ice cream cone downtown. If you can eat the cone in five seconds, you get another one free.

(iv) প্রথমবার ইঙ্গিতসহ দ্বিতীয়বার উল্লেখ করা হলে

Dr. Atiq performed a complicated surgery. He said that the patient was recovering nicely. (এখানে surgery শব্দটি দ্বারা patient শব্দের ইঙ্গিত বুঝা যায়।)

(v) Ordinals ও superlatives এর পূর্বে (first, next, primary, most, best, least, etc.)

The first man to set foot on the moon… The greatest advances in medicine…

(vi) Specifiers (one of, only, principle, same/similar etc.) এর পূর্বে

The sole purpose of our organization is… The only fact we need to consider is…

(vii) Restricters (words, phrases, or clauses যা কোনো noun এর অর্থকে সীমাবদ্ধ করে দেয়।) ব্যবহার করা হলে noun টি নির্দিষ্ট হয়ে যায়।

Study the chapter on preposition for the test tomorrow. Also study the notes you took at the lecture that Mr Harun gave yesterday.

Article এর বিশেষ ব্যবহার

Proper Nouns:

Rule:

11. যখন Proper Noun কে Subject এর সাথে তুলনা করা হয় তখন Proper Noun এর সাথে আমরা a/ an ব্যবহার করি। কিন্তু Proper Noun এর পর prepositional phrase থাকলে আমরা the ব্যবহার করি।

I like the writings of Nazrul. I think he is a Byron. However, we can say, he is the Byron of Bangladesh.

12. ঐতিহাসিকভাবে উল্লেখযোগ্য স্থান, ভবন, সমুদ্র, নদী, সংবাদপত্র, মরুভূমি, হোটেল, সিনেমা, মিউজিয়াম ও গ্যালারির নামের পূর্বে আমরা ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি।

The Taj Mahal is the symbol of love. Emperor Shahjahan built it to immortalize his love for his wife Mumtaj. It stands on the Jamuna.

13. যেসব Proper noun দ্বারা republic, state, union বা group বুঝায় তার পূর্বে আমরা ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি।

The United Kingdom and The United States are the most powerful countries of the world now.

14. Noun + preposition + Noun দিয়ে যে proper noun গঠিত তার পূর্বে আমরা ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি।

I am a student of the University of Dhaka. The students of Dhaka University played a great role in the Language Movement.

Note: কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু বা প্রাণী বা স্থানের নিজস্ব নামকে Proper noun বলে। যেমন: Jisan is a good boy, I like Rahim ইত্যাদি।

Jobs and Positions:

15. কোনো পদ (position) এর পূর্বে আমরা ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি। কিন্তু পদ (position) এর সাথে যদি কোনো Proper noun থাকে বা পদ যদি Complement হিসেবে বসে তবে কোনো article বসে না।

The Headmaster praised me yesterday. But Principal Rafiqul Islam did not like it. So I will campaign so that the members of the association do not elect him President.

Note: Verb এর পরের যে noun বা adjective তার পূর্ববর্তী subject কে নির্দেশ করে তাকে complement বলে। যেমন: He is honest. He is a girl . He is a singer. We made him chairman. ইত্যাদি।

16. Singular noun যদি Abstract idea প্রকাশ করে তবে তার পূর্বে ‘the’ ব্যবহার করা হয়।

The mother rose in her. We should control the beast in us. Here ‘mother’ means quality of a mother. এখানে 'mother' এর অর্থ হচ্ছে ’মাতৃত্ব’ যা একটি Abstract Idea।

Adjective/ Verb/ Adverb/Person/Preposition:

17. (i) সাধারণত, আমরা adjective/ adverb/ verb এর পূর্বে কোনো article ব্যবহার করি না। যেমন: Fahima is × brilliant.

(ii) কিন্তু adjective যদি noun হিসেবে বসে তবে তার পূর্বে ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি। যেমন: She always helps the poor.

(iii) verb যদি noun হিসেবে বসে তবে তার পূর্বে আমরা ‘a/an’ ব্যবহার করি। যেমন: She everyday goes out for a walk in the morning.

(iv) Adjective এবং Noun এর মাঝে কোনো Article ব্যবহার করা হয়না। যেমন: Fahima is a brilliant × student.

18. Proper noun এর সাথে Adjective বসলে, আমরা ঐ Adjective এর পূর্বে ‘the ’ ব্যবহার করি।

Akbar the Great was an emperor of Delhi. [এখানে Akbar - Proper noun; Great - adjective]

19. Adjective এর Comparative form এর সাথে ‘of the two’ থাকলে ঐ adjective এর পূর্বে আমরা ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি।

Bina is the younger of the two girls.

20. Double comparative থাকলে আমরা উভয়টির সাথে ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি।

The higher we fly, the harder we fall. The more, the merrier.

21. Possessive/ Determiner এর আগে বা পরে কোনো article বসে না।

My × pen is red. I saw there some × boys and girls. You will be paid 300 taka × each day.

Determiner: Determiner হচ্ছে এমন কিছু শব্দ যেগুলো Noun বা Noun phrase এর পূর্বে বসে Noun বা Noun phrase গুলোর সংখ্যা, পরিমাণ বা সেগুলোর নির্দিষ্টতা নির্দেশ করে।

Parts of the body:

Rule:

22. অঙ্গ এর সাথে সাধারণত আমরা possessives ব্যবহার করি; তবে preposition থাকলে ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি।

She broke her leg climbing. She has been shot in the leg.

Illness:

23. রোগ বা ব্যথার নাম সাধারণত uncountable। তাই এর পূর্বে article বসে না।

She never had × measles. I have got × toothache again.

24. কিন্তু Aches, pains, growths, attack সম্পর্কিত রোগ। যেমন: cough, headache, cold, stroke এর সাথে আমরা ‘a/ an’ ব্যবহার করি। I have got a horrible cold.

Place/object অথবা activity noun:

25. School, College, Market, Bed, Hospital, Prison, Mosque, Temple, Church, Court যখন activting করা হয় তখন আমরা কোনো Article ব্যবহার করি না। তবে object/place/secondary প্রকাশ করলে ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি।

The patient was admitted to × hospital. (Primary purpose)

I went to the hospital to see the patient. (Secondary purpose)

We ate × dinner together dinner was delicious.

Sports, Language, festivals and disciplines:

26. Sports, discipline, language, festival এর নাম এবং society, nature, space, relation এর পূর্বে কোনো Article বসে না।

× Bangla is our mother tongue. × Cricket is my favourite game. × Mother manages the finances in our family. I took × physics instead of × biology.

Measurements:

27. ‘by’ যুক্ত পরিমাপকের পূর্বে আমরা ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি। কিন্তু ‘প্রতি’ অর্থে পরিমাপকের পূর্বে ‘a/ an’ বসে।

Do you sell the eggs by the dozen? ~ Yes I do. 100 taka a dozen.

Rekha earns five thousand taka a month. (Here ‘a’ means ‘every’)

Musical Instrument:

28. Musical instrument এর সাথে আমরা সাধারণত the ব্যবহার করি। তবে jazz, pop, classic music এর সাথে কোনো Article ব্যবহার করি না।

The violin is really difficult. Who is playing the piano? I like × pop music.

Media, Communication & Entertainment:

29. এই বিনোদন মাধ্যমগুলোর ব্যবহার বুঝালে আমরা সাধারণত the ব্যবহার করি। কিন্তু এগুলো পেশার ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহার করা হলে কোনো Article ব্যবহার করি না।

I always listen to the radio while doing my homework.

He has worked in radio and television all his life.

Days, Months and Seasons:

30. (i) Period of time (5 minutes, 7 years etc.), dawn, dusk, night, noon, দিনের নাম, মাসের নাম, ঋতুর নামের সাথে সাধারণত আমরা Article ব্যবহার করি না।

(ii) তবে Morning, afternoon, evening, decades, centuries ও histroic periods এর সাথে ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি।

× February is the second month of the year.

Jack, meet me on Thursday. ~ Ok. I will in the morning.

(iii) মাসের বা সপ্তাহের নামের সাথে ক্রমবাচক থাকলে ঐ ক্রমবাচক শব্দের পূর্বে the বসে।

Double Expression:

31. বিশেষকরে preposition যুক্ত double expressions এর সাথে আমরা কোনো article ব্যবহার করি না।

With knife and fork, day after day, husband and wife, from top to bottom.

Meals:

32. Meal এর নামের পূর্বে আমরা কোনো article ব্যবহার করি না। তবে এর সাথে Adjective থাকলে a/ an ব্যবহার করি।

I took × breakfast at 8:00 am.

It was an excellent breakfast.

Transports:

33. ‘By + transport’ থাকলে আমরা কোনো article ব্যবহার করি না। কিন্তু অন্যান্য ক্ষেত্রে আমরা article ব্যবহার করি।

I will not go by × launch again. When I was in the launch yesterday, I got very frightened.

Roads:

34. road যুক্ত রাস্তার নামের সাথে আমরা ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি; কিন্তু street, lane, square or avenue এর সাথে কোনো article ব্যবহার করি না।

I live in Jigatola near × Rifles Square. Two years back, I was in × Bonogram lane that originates from the BCC Road which is a branch of × Rankeen street.

Casts, Nationals:

35. বহুবচন গোত্র বা বংশ বা জাতি এর সাথে আমরা ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি।

The Khans, the Pathans.

Physical Environment:

36. আমরা town, country, seaside, sea, wind, rain, weather, sunshine etc এর সাথে ‘the’ ব্যবহার করি।

I love listening to the wind.

37. নির্দিষ্ট কিছু Phrase/idioms/proverbs এ নির্দিষ্ট article বসে।

38. Unit: পরিমাপ বাচক unit এর পূর্বে one অর্থে a/an বসে।

39. How/what/such/so

Such/what এর পর singular countable noun থাকলে তার সাথে a/an বসে।

What a beautiful bird it is?

I have never seen such an incident.

How ও so থাকলে a/an কখনো noun phrase এর পূর্বে না বসে ঠিক noun এর পূর্বে বসে।

× How a beautiful bird it is!

√ How beautiful a bird it is!

40. Collective Noun: Collective noun এর পূর্বে the ব্যবহার করি। কিছু common noun নিয়ে যখন একটি group হলে ঐ group এর নামটি collective noun। যেমন: কিছু soldiers মিলে হয় army; কিছু students মিলে হয় class।

আরো ভালোভাবে article আয়ত্ত করতে নিচের চার্টটি লক্ষ কর। এখানে A, AN এবং THE ব্যবহারের কিছু সাধারণ এবং নির্দিষ্ট নিয়ম দেখানো হল:

মনে রাখবে, Article সঠিকভাবে ব্যবহারের জন্য তোমাকে noun টি countable না uncountable তা বুঝতে হবে।

"a" অথবা "an" ব্যবহার কর

সাধারণ নিয়ম (General Rules)

Singular Countable noun যখন ‘অনেকের মধ্যে একজন/ একটি’; ‘একটি’; ‘‘সাধারণ অর্থে’’ বোঝায় তখন "a" অথবা "an" ব্যবহার কর।

➤ Alif is a student. (অনেক ছাত্রের মধ্যে একজন।)

➤ I like a good movie. (অনেক মুভির মধ্যে একটি।)

কোনো paragraph বা অনুচ্ছেদ লেখার সময় কোনো একটি noun প্রথমবার লেখার সময় "a" অথবা "an" ব্যবহার কর।

➤ I saw a movie last night. Movies are really very good to see at night.

➤ A man came to you yesterday.

নাম/শিরোনাম নির্দিষ্ট না হলে "a" অথবা "an" ব্যবহার কর।

অনির্দিষ্ট হলে,

শহর এবং প্রদেশের নাম (Names of Citis and States) অনির্দিষ্ট হলে,

মহাসাগর, সাগর, নদী, মরুভূমি, বন, খাল - এর নাম (Names of Oceans, Rivers, Seas, Deserts, Forests, Canals)

অনির্দিষ্ট বোঝালে, a/ an ব্যবহার করবে।

লেকের নাম (Names of Lake)

অনির্দিষ্ট বোঝালে -

অনির্দিষ্ট কোনো বিল্ডিং বা সৌধের নামের ক্ষেত্রে a/an ব্যবহার করবে -

অনির্দিষ্ট স্কুল কলেজের ক্ষেত্রে a/an ব্যবহার করবে -

"the" ব্যবহার কর

সাধারণ নিয়ম (General Rules)

যখন noun টি নির্দিষ্ট করে বোঝায় তখন "the" ব্যবহার কর।

উদাহরণস্বরূপ noun টি যখন কোন প্রকারের শুধুমাত্র একটি কে বোঝায়।

➤ Harun was the first man. (একমাত্র প্রথম ব্যক্তি।)

➤ Have you heard the news? (নির্দিষ্ট একটি খবর)

একই noun একই paragraph এ দ্বিতীয় বার উল্লেখ করার সময় "the" ব্যবহার কর।

➤ A man came to you yesterday. The man was very strange.

নাম/শিরোনাম/পদবী (Title)

নির্দিষ্ট কোনো ব্যক্তির যদি কোনো পদবী থাকে তখন 'the' ব্যবহার কর।

দেশের নাম যদি plural হয় অথবা কোনো group নির্দেশ করে তাহলে 'the' ব্যবহার কর।

নিচের ক্ষেত্রে 'the' ব্যবহার করবে

নির্দিষ্ট করে মহাসাগর কে বোঝালে, "the" বসে।

যদি স্কুল, কলেজ বা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নামের সাথে 'of' অথবা 'for থাকে তবে 'the' ব্যবহার করবে

সাধারণ নিয়ম (General Rules)

যখন কোন একটি uncountable noun সামগ্রিক অর্থে অর্থাৎ সবাইকে বা সবকিছুকে বোঝায় তখন article হবে না।

➤ We believe in × love. ('love' uncountable noun এবং এখানে তা নির্দিষ্ট নয়। এখানে তা সামগ্রিক।)

যখন কোনো plural countable noun দ্বারা ঐ জাতীয় সবগুলোকে বা কিছু সংখ্যক কে বোঝাবে তখন article ব্যবহার করবে না।

➤ Movies are entertaining. (কিছু movies; সামগ্রিকভাবে)

➤ × Mangoes are juicy. (সামগ্রিক অর্থে।)

নাম/শিরোনাম/পদবী (Title)

সরাসরি নামের সঙ্গে পদবী থাকলে article ব্যবহার করোনা।

দেশের নাম (Names of Countries)

পূর্বের দুইটি ক্ষেত্র ছাড়া article ব্যবহার করবে না।

মহাদেশের নামের ক্ষেত্রে article ব্যবহার করবে না।

যখন স্কুল, কলেজ বা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নাম কোনো ব্যক্তি অথবা জায়গার নামে হয় এবং তাতে কোনো 'of' বা 'for' থাকে না,

তখন article বসে না।
