My dear Rupa
Thank you for your letter to know the procedure of admission to college. I am telling you about it.
For admission to a college you have to apply in a prescribed form. So you have to bring a form from your preferred school. Then you will fill in the form. After this, you will submit the application along with a passport size photograph, an academic transcript and a copy of testimonial from your school. Some colleges want the income certificate of the applicant's father or guardian and a nationality certificate.
If the applicants are more than the seat capacity of the college, an admission test or interview is held. Otherwise, you will be selected for admission in order of merit in the S.S.C. Examination. Then you have to pay the fees and other charges for admission. After admission your name will be entered in the admission register and you will have a roll number.
You can get a prospectus from the college to know the rules and regulations of admission. I suggest you to collect a copy of the prospectus.
I am fine. No more today.

The Story of a Successful Woman
Once there lived a middle-aged woman named Bilkis. She had three sons. Her husband was very lazy and he did not do any work. She had to work all day long to earn money for the family. One day she met a group of people who came to her village from the Grameen Bank. They said that they were interested in helping the poor people, the landless and the helpless.

She learnt from them that they would provide loans to the poor and helpless people. No news could be so good to Bilkis more than it. Because, she could try to change her lot with their financial support.
Once she went to the bank with some of her neighbours. An officer of the bank greeted them and made them understand the activities of the bank and the eligibility of getting loan. The officer advised them to form five or six groups. Each group would contain five or six members.

Bilkis communicated with her neighbours and managed some people to form groups. A centre was set up. Bilkis was elected chairperson of her group. The bank would conduct business with the members through the chairperson.

At first, the bank approved a loan of five thousand taka for Bilkis. With that money Bilkis started rice-husking business. She also conducted a stationary shop beside the school. Bilkis gained a good profit by dint of hard labour. She succeeded to repay the installations.

Subsequently, she got a larger loan and enlarged her business. Within two years, her bad days were gone by. She built a new house and was able to feed her children and family members properly. She became solvent with the loan and her hard work.

The Story of a Successful Woman Completing Story

My dear Mukul
How are you? I didn't get any letter from you for the last six months. Hope you are safe and sound.
Today I'll tell you about an exciting event which happened in my life last week. I had a chance to travel by air for thirty minutes from Dhaka to Jessore. It was the first time I travelled by a plane. It was on the occasion of my elder sister's marriage ceremony. We decided to go to Jessore by plane. Father collected five tickets for us. When we reached the domestic terminal of the Shah Jalal International Airport, I felt thrilled. At the time of take off I became a bit nervous but soon after it continued to fly above clouds, I got out of my nervousness. The thirty minutes passed very quickly at the announcement that we were at Jessore Airport. The incident of my maiden journey by air is now a memory to recollect. I will not forget it in my life.
No more today. I look forward to hearing from you about your first air journey.

With love

My dear friend
Thank you for your letter. I am glad to know about your interesting experience of attending a wedding party.
I am also telling you my experience of taking food in the Cantoon restaurant in Kushtia. It is a luxurious restaurant in the heart of the town. It remains constantly illuminated at night. The environment inside the restaurant is very charming. The dinner was served at 8.30 pm. We were four friends at the same table. At first, soup was given. It was very tasty. Then other items were served. The menu consisted of chicken fry, polao, lobster, mutton, vegetables, fruits and sweets. Every item was sufficient for us. We ate to our heart's content. The waiters were very polite. Their service was excellent.
When we were taking food, an interesting thing happened. A seven-year old boy was eating with his mother. Suddenly, he became very violent and threw away the plate of food at his mother's face. It made us all laugh.
That's all for today. I am fine. With best love to you.

Dear Habib
How are you? I am fine. Yesterday I had a river journey. I am giving you a short account of it.
A river cruise was sponsored by 'The Rotary Club of Dhaka Downtown'. We, all the members of our family joined the program. The steamer started from Pagla Ghat at 10 am. It was a double-decker steamer. I sat on the deck. There were 50 people on board of different families. The Rotary District Governor was a guest of honor. There were some musicians who presented melodious songs. Oh! How charming the sights on the bank of the Buriganga appeared! I saw many buildings and industries. There were many steamers and launches plying and crossing. After about three hours' journey we reached Ghorashal. Then we were given packet lunch. After lunch, we began our return journey. I had my camera with me. I took some snaps. I found nobody swimming and diving in the river as the water was polluted. However, some fishermen were found fishing. The fresh wind made us cool. The bright sun gave us joy. We enjoyed all the moments. When it was 4 pm, we returned to Pagla Ghat.
That's all for today.

Your loving friend

Write a letter about describing farewell party

Dhaka
The 7th April 2023

Dear Nipa
I have received your letter just now. I hope that you are well by the grace of Almighty Allah. I am so so.
Now I want to tell you about a farewell party. I went to this party as one of the guests on the 16th March. The party was about the farewell of an old teacher in our college. This function began at 4 pm in our college auditorium with the recitation from the Holy Quran and the Geeta. As I was a guest, I was requested to take a seat. The speech went on. Suddenly the Principal requested me to say something and I did so. The function was very gloomy because of the farewell.
This party came to an end at 7 pm. Everybody returned home by having some sweetmeat from the farewell party.
No more today. More when we meet again. Convey my best compliments to your parents. With best wishes.

10 February 2023

Dear Nasif
Heartfelt love to you. I hope you all are quite well. I am well too. You would be pleased to know that recently we went to a study tour from our college. Let me give you a description of the tour.

I along with some of my friends decided to go on a study tour. According to the decision, we went to the study tour on the 25 January. We went to the Shat Gambuj Mosque in Bagerhat. You know it is a place of historical interest. We had hired a bus to go there. We also took with us other necessary things. The hired bus took us to the place without any difficulty. We reached there before the expected time.

Reaching there we began to visit the Shat Gambuj Mosque. We had taken cooked food with us and so we did not have to cook. I was surprised to see the big and beautiful building of the mosque. The mosque was excellently built following the Mughal style of architecture. The surroundings, especially the Majar of Saint Khan Jahan Ali, the large tank in front of it and the crocodiles in the tank were also charming. I had to play an important role in the tour. I was in charge of management.

However, after staying there till 3 pm, we started our return journey. In fact, the tour really widened my outlook and inspired me a lot to go to such tours.

Yours ever
Arif

Write a letter about your aim in life

105, Shantinagar Road, Dhaka-1000
13 March 2023

Dear father
I have just received your letter. In your letter you have asked me about my aim in life. Of course, I have my own aim in life. And I am leading my life towards my aim. My aim in life is to be a doctor. There are many reasons for choosing the profession of a doctor. The village people in our country are very poor, especially the people of my village. They suffer from various diseases. But there is no qualified doctor to serve them. There are a few quacks but they cannot serve them properly. Rather they extort money from the simple folks. Many people meet premature death for want of proper treatment. So I have decided to serve the people of my village through the profession of a doctor.
In this regard after passing the HSC I shall get myself admitted into a medical college. After obtaining the MBBS degree I shall go back to my native village and set myself to serve my village people through practice. I shall give them my service at the lowest cost.
No more today. Pray for me so that I may achieve my goal. My best regards to my mother and affection for my younger sister. Take care of your health.

25 April, 2023

My dear father
I hope you are hale and hearty. I have just received your letter. In your letter you have forbidden me to waste my time by using facebook. I know it well that you have told this because of the adverse effects of facebook. But it has some advantages too. It is a great/best way to keep in touch with the family and friends who live far away. We can easily communicate with our near and dear ones with instant messaging and even video chat. We can easily update status, photos and profile information through it. In spite of having many advantages it has some disadvantages too. Many students become addicted to it and waste their valuable time in using facebook that may hamper their studies. They suffer in the long run. I am aware of the demerits of it. So, I am assuring you that I will take the best of it. But I will not spend much time in using it.
No more today. Salam to mother and love to my youngers.

a letter to your friend about bad effects of smoking

18 February, 2023
Mirbag, Rangpur

My dear Rana
At first take my cordial love and hearten greetings from the core of heart. I am very anxious about you as you smoke a lot of cigarettes a day. Smoking is surely harmful to health. I hope this letter will be able to make you conscious of the bad effects of smoking and help you stop it.

Smoking causes a major health hazard. It is so dangerous that it may cause cancer, heart attack, chronic bronchitis and other diseases. One puff of cigarette smoke contains more or less nicotine, methyl alcohol, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, arsenic, benzopyrene and several other acids which are fatal to human beings. It will decay and destroy you day by day. So you should stop it without further delay.

With best wishes to you.

Yours ever

Man Cannot Live Alone
Long ago, a young man found life in the family in his village full of problems and sufferings. Quarrels, ill-feelings, jealousy, enmityall were part of everyday life there.

So he left his house and went to a jungle to live by himself. There he made a nice little hut with wood, bamboo and reeds. “Ah, how happy I am here!” said the man to himself.

But one day he found some mice in his hut. The little creatures soon made holes in his blanket. So he brought a cat to kill the mice. The cat needed milk. So he brought a cow. The cow needed grass and hay. So he brought a cowboy.

The cowboy needed food. So he took a wife to cook meals. Then children were born to them, and the man found himself again in a family.

So nobody can live alone, unless they are either angels or devils. People need food, shelter, companions and cooperation. They need to help each other. And if they live in a family or community, their need can be fulfilled. Hence living in society can make people good and happy citizens.

Nelson Mandela guided South Africa from the shackles of apartheid to a multi-racial democracy, as an icon of peace and reconciliation who came to embody the struggle for justice around the world.

Imprisoned for nearly three decades for his fight against white minority rule, Mandela never lost his resolve to fight for his people's emancipation. He was determined to bring down apartheid while avoiding a civil war. His prestige and charisma helped him win the support of the world.

"I hate race discrimination most intensely and in all its manifestations. I have fought it all during my life; I will fight it now, and will do so until the end of my days," Mandela said in his acceptance speech on becoming South Africa's first black president in 1994, ......."The time for the healing of the wounds has come. The moment to bridge the chasms that divide us has come."

"We have, at last, achieved our political emancipation."
In 1993, Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor he shared with F.W. de Klerk, the white African leader who had freed him from prison three years earlier and negotiated the end of apartheid.
Mandela went on to play a prominent role on the world stage as an advocate of human dignity in the face of challenges ranging from political repression to AIDS.

He formally left public life in June 2004 before his 86th birthday, telling his adoring countrymen: "Don't call me. I'll call you." But he remained one of the world's most revered public figures, combining celebrity sparkle with an unwavering message of freedom, respect and human rights.

"He is at the epicenter of our time, ours in South Africa, and yours, wherever you are," Nadine Gordimer, the South African writer and Nobel Laureate for Literature, once remarked.

The years Mandela spent behind bars made him the world's most celebrated political prisoner and a leader of mythic stature for millions of black South Africans and other oppressed people far beyond his country's borders...............................

..................

Answer (B):
(a) Apartheid is a political situation in which people of different races are separated. I don't support apartheid because apartheid destroys the unity and harmony of a society and brings out civil war.
(b) Mandela's words that inspire me most are that "I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal I hope to live for and to achieve. But if need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."
(c) Mandela was awarded Nobel Peace Prize for keeping peace in South Africa as well as in the whole world by fighting against apartheid.
(d) Democracy is the belief in freedom and equality, between people, or a system of government based on this belief, in which power is either held by elected representatives or directly by the people themselves. The people of the democratic world remember Mandela with honour and respect.
(e) The significance and importance of 1993, 1994 & 2004 is that in 1993 Nelson Mandela was awarded The Nobel Peace Prize, in 1994 Mandela became the first black President of South Africa and in 2004 Mandela left public life.
(f) Nelson Mandela is the most celebrated and undisputed Black African leader. He is famous for his life long struggle against apartheid to free the black people from the racial discrimination of the white people.
(g) He became the first Black President of South Africa in 1994. In his inaugural speech after accepting Presidency he said, "The time for the healing of the wounds has come. The moment to bridge the chasms that divide us has come. We have, at last, achieved our political emancipation."
(h) Nelson Mandela's dream was to gain freedom for the Black Africans of South Africa and to achieve political emancipation for them. He fought for the Black South Africans to bring down racial discrimination by avoiding a civil war through a non-violent movement.
(i) Throughout his life, Nelson Mandela struggled for the emancipation of black people. But during this time he was non-violent and avoided civil war. So the author says Nelson Mandela an icon of peace.
(j) Mandela was imprisoned for nearly 30 years. His determination was to bring down apartheid and the emancipation of black people from the domination of white minority.
(k) This sentence clarifies the bringing down of apartheid. Apartheid had created a big chasm between the black and the white in South Africa. But with the struggle of Mandela and his becoming President of South Africa there's created a bridge to unite the South Africans.
(l) Mandela played a prominent role on the world stage as an advocate of human dignity in the face of challenges ranging from political repression to AIDS.
(m) Mandela was imprisoned for nearly three decades. But undergoing such a suffering, he never lost his resolve to fight for his people's emancipation and to bring down apartheid. Thus for his sacrifice, patience and non-violent attitude, he won the support of the world.
(n) The sentence indicates the successful end of a long struggle for achieving political rights of the black people of South Africa.
(o) Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for his undaunted determination to free the black Africans from the shackles of the white minority rule and to gain political emancipation. He remained in prison for nearly three decades.

Part-I: Reading Test (60 Marks)
1. Read the passage and answer the questions A and B.
...........In 1993, Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor he shared with F.W. de Klerk, the white African leader who had freed him from prison three years earlier and negotiated the end of apartheid.
The years Mandela spent behind bars made him the world's most celebrated political prisoner and a leader of mythic stature for millions of black South Africans and other oppressed people far beyond his country's borders.
Charged with capital offences in the 1963 Rivonia Trial, his statement from the dock was his political testimony.
"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination."
"I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities," he told the court.
"It is an ideal I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."
Friends adored Mandela and fondly called him "Madiba," the clan name by which he was known. People lauded his humanity, kindness and dignity.

Part-I: Reading Test (60 Marks)
1. Read the passage and answer the questions A and B.
My brothers,
I stand before you today with a heart overflowing with grief. You are fully aware of the events that are going on and understand their importance. We have been trying to do our best to cope with the situation. And yet, unfortunately, the streets of Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi and Rangpur are awash with the blood of our brothers. The people of Bengal now want to be free, the people of Bengal now want to live, and the people of Bengal now want their rights.
What have we done that was wrong? After the elections, the people of Bangladesh voted as one for me, for the Awami League. We were to sit in the National Assembly, draft a constitution for ourselves there, and build our country; the people of this land would thereby get economic, political, and cultural freedom. But it is with regret that I have to report to you today that we have passed through twenty-three tragic years; Bengal's history of those years is full of stories of torture inflicted on our people, of blood shed by them repeatedly. Twenty-three years of a history of men and women in agony!
The history of Bengal is the history of a people who have repeatedly made their highways crimson with their blood. We shed blood in 1952; even though we were the victors in the elections of 1954 we could not form a government then. In 1958 Ayub Khan declared Martial Law to enslave us for the next ten years. In 1966 when we launched the six point movement our boys were shot dead on 7 June. When after the movement of 1969 Ayub Khan fell from power and Yahya Khan assumed the reins of the government he declared that he would give us a constitution and restore democracy; we listened to him then. A lot was happened since and elections have taken place........

...................

One day I asked her, "Where do you live? Why do you do this? Why don't you go to school?"
What came out was quite pathetic. The girl replied that she lived in a slum. Her father left her mother and married another woman. She did not even know where he lived. But he often came to her mother and claimed money from her. She has one little sister. At present her mother works as a maid.
I asked her, "What's your dream? Do you have any dream?" Yes, she has a dream. She has dreams like everybody else. But her dreams are not very lofty. Her simple dream is to go to school. She wants to study. After completing her studies, she likes to take a small job. She wants to make her mother and younger sister happy. And this is a very simple dream of a little girl.
