Ayesha Begum has three sons and two daughters. Her husband was a landless farmer who used to work on other people's land. With great effort they married their daughters off by the time they reached teenage. The sons also started working with their father as day labourers when they were old enough to help.
By the time they were about seventeen years old and all of them had left to work in nearby towns to earn money. At first they used to send money to their parents occasionally. But after getting married they barely had enough to support their own families. Ayesha Begum and her husband are now old and feeble. Years of malnutrition and deprivation have made them look older than their years. All they are left with now is their broken little thatched house.
Out of desperation Ayesha Begum has started begging in the village to feed her old, invalid husband and herself. She does not know what ails him neither does she have the means to find out. She is too busy collecting food for survival.
Now, she is experiencing the curse of poverty in her last period of life.

আয়েশা বেগমের তিন পুত্র এবং দুই কন্যা। তার স্বামী একজন ভূমিহীন কৃষক যে অন্যের জমিতে কাজ করত। কঠোর চেষ্টা করে যখন তাদের কন্যারা কিশোরী হয়েছিল তারা তখন তাদের বিয়ে দিয়েছিল। পুত্রদ্বয় তাদের বাবার সাথে দিনমজুরের কাজ শুরু করেছিল যখন সাহায্য করার মতো যথেষ্ট বয়স তাদের হয়েছিল।
সতের বছর বয়সের মধ্যেই তারা সকলে পার্শ্ববর্তী শহরে অর্থ উপার্জন করতে কাজ করা ছেড়ে দিয়েছিল। প্রথমে মাঝে মাঝে তারা তাদের পিতামাতাকে টাকা পাঠাত। কিন্তু বিয়ে করার পর তারা খুব কমই তাদের পরিবারে সহায়তা করতে পারত। আয়েশা বেগম এবং তার স্বামী এখন বৃদ্ধ এবং দুর্বল। বছরের পর বছর ধরে পুষ্টিহীনতা এবং অভাব তাদের চেহারায় বেশি বয়সের ছাপ ফুটিয়ে তুলেছে। সবকিছুর মধ্যে শুধু তাদের ভাঙ্গা খড়ের ঘরটি টিকে রয়েছে। মরিয়া হয়ে উঠে আয়েশা বেগম তার নিজের ও তার বৃদ্ধ ও অক্ষম স্বামীর খাবারের জন্য গ্রামে ভিক্ষা করা শুরু করেছিল। কী তাকে পীড়িত করে সে সেটা জানে না এবং তা থেকে মুক্তির উপায়ও সে জানে না। সে বেঁচে থাকার জন্য খাবার সংগ্রহে খুব ব্যস্ত।
এখন সে তার জীবনের শেষ সময়ে এসে দারিদ্র্যের অভিশাপের অভিজ্ঞতা অর্জন করছে।
