A Tragic Accident
In the 15th of June, 1999. I got back home from my college at 5 p.m. In the evening I said my prayer. Then I studied for three hours as usual. Next, I had my supper and went to bed at about 11 p.m. I was in a deep sleep. Suddenly, I woke up with a hue and cry at dead of night at a little distance. I got up from bed and ran to the spot.
I saw that a cottage was burning. It was the darling place of a poor family. Fire engulfed each and every corner of the cottage. Everywhere of the cottage, there was nothing but the hungry flame of the fire.
Hearing the hue and cry of the domestic help, the inmates of the house woke up and somehow managed to save their lives. But the only son of the family, an infant, was left in the burning fire. The mother of the infant was wailing madly. She was crying for help to rescue her son. Everybody gathered there was trying to extinguish the fire. But no one dared go into the cottage to rescue the infant.
There was a universal distress all around about the fate of the infant. At this all the people became wordless. There was a pin drop silence for some moments. Then everyone saw a young man springing out of the cottage with the little baby in his bosom. There was fire in the dress of the young man. The mother ran quickly to the young man and took her baby in her lap.
Some men rushed to the young man with gunny sack and somehow managed to save the life of an innocent infant. Though all the belongings were burnt to ashes, the couple seemed to be happy getting their son alive.

১৯৯৯ সালের ১৫ই জুন, বিকাল ৫টায় আমি কলেজ হতে বাড়ি ফিরছিলাম। সন্ধ্যায় আমি নামাজ পড়েছিলাম। তারপর যথারীতি আমি তিন ঘণ্টা পড়াশুনা করেছিলাম। পরবর্তীতে, আমি আমার রাতের খাবার খেয়েছিলাম এবং প্রায় রাত ১১টায় বিছানায় গিয়েছিলাম। আমি গভীর ঘুমে ছিলাম। হঠাৎ মধ্য রাত্রিতে কিছু দূরে একটি চেঁচামেচি/শোরগোলে আমি জেগে উঠলাম। আমি বিছানা থেকে নামলাম এবং সে স্থানে ছুটে গেলাম।
আমি দেখলাম যে একটি কুঁড়েঘর পুড়ছিল। এটি একটি গরিব পরিবারের প্রিয় স্থান ছিল। আগুন কুঁড়েঘরের প্রত্যেক কোণকে গ্রাস করেছিল, ক্ষুধার্ত আগুন ছাড়া সেখানে আর কিছুই ছিল না।
সাহায্যের জন্য শোরগোল শুনে গৃহাভ্যন্তরের লোকজন জেগে গিয়েছিল এবং কোনোক্রমে তাদের জীবন রক্ষা করতে সমর্থ হয়েছিল। কিন্তু পরিবারের একমাত্র পুত্র, একটি বাচ্চা/শিশু জ্বলন্ত আগুনের মধ্যে ছিল। বাচ্চাটির মা পাগলের মত বিলাপ করছিল। সে তার সন্তান/পুত্রের উদ্ধারের জন্য সাহায্য প্রার্থনা করছিল। সকলেই আগুন নেভানোর চেষ্টায় জড়ো হয়েছিল। কিন্তু কেউ কুঁড়েঘরে গিয়ে বাচ্চাটিকে উদ্ধার করতে সাহস পায়নি।
শিশুটির দুর্দশা নিয়ে সেখানকার সকলেই চিন্তিত ছিল। এতে সকল জনসাধারণ বাকরুদ্ধ হয়ে পড়েছিল। সেখানে কিছু মুহূর্ত পিন পতন নীরবতা ছিল। তখন প্রত্যেকে দেখল যে যুবক তার বুকে ছোট বাচ্চাটাকে নিয়ে কুঁড়েঘর থেকে বেরিয়ে আসল। যুবকটির পোশাকে আগুন ধরে গেল। শিশুটির মা যুবক ব্যক্তিটির নিকট ছুটে গেল এবং তার সন্তানকে তার কোলে নিল।
কিছু লোক যুবক ব্যক্তিটির নিকট বস্তা নিয়ে ছুটে গেল এবং কোনোভাবে নিষ্পাপ শিশুটির জীবন বাঁচাতে সক্ষম হয়েছিল। যদিও সকল জিনিসপত্র পুড়ে ছাই হয়ে গিয়েছিল, দম্পতিটিকে তাদের পুত্র পেয়ে খুশি দেখাচ্ছিল।
