Slow and Steady Wins the Race/ A Race between the Hare And the Tortoise
A hare is a very speedy animal. It can run very fast. But a tortoise moves very slowly. Once upon a time a hare was very proud of his speed and cut a joke to a tortoise. Once the tortoise challenged the hare and invited him to run a race with him. They both went to a fox and asked him to be the judge of their contest. The fox agreed and on an appointed day they met at cross road.
Finally the race began. The hare, from the beginning, started running at a top speed and soon left the tortoise far behind. Crossing almost half of the distance the hare looked back. There was no sign of the tortoise around.
The hare smiled and said to himself, "I am really a fool. Why should I run so fast in the hot sun with the slow, old tortoise? I will start again when the tortoise will catch up. Before that I will have a rest." So, he lay down to have a rest under a shady tree. But, as he was a little tired, he soon fell asleep. The tortoise, on the other hand, went along his slow but steady way. He never stopped nor looked back and at last passed the proud hare and reached the finishing spot well ahead of the hare.
The hare knowing not when he fell asleep, awoke with a start and looking back found no sign of the tortoise. Still satisfied with himself he started running. But on reaching the finishing spot he saw the tortoise gossiping with the fox, the judge of the race.
Then the tortoise said, "You should know friend, slow and steady wins the race."

খরগোশ খুবই দ্রুতগামী প্রাণী। এটা খুব দ্রুত দৌড়াতে পারে। কিন্তু কচ্ছপ খুব ধীরে ধীরে চলে। একদা একটি খরগোশ তার গতির গর্ব করত এবং কচ্ছপকে বিদ্রুপ করত। একবার কচ্ছপটি খরগোশকে তার শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব প্রমাণের জন্য দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতায় আমন্ত্রণ জানাল। তারা উভয়ই খেঁকশিয়ালের কাছে গেল এবং তাকে তাদের প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতার বিচারক হতে বলল। খেঁকশিয়ালটি রাজি হল এবং এক নির্ধারিত দিনে তারা দুই রাস্তার সংযোগস্থলে মিলিত হল।
অবশেষে, প্রতিযোগিতা/দৌড় শুরু হল। খরগোশটি শুরু থেকেই খুব দ্রুত দৌড়াচ্ছিল এবং শীঘ্রই কচ্ছপকে অনেক পেছনে ফেলেছিল। অর্ধেক রাস্তা অতিক্রম করার পর খরগোশটি পেছনের দিকে তাকাল। আশেপাশে কচ্ছপের কোনো চিহ্ন দেখা যাচ্ছিল না।
খরগোশটি হেসে নিজে নিজে বলল, “সত্যিই আমি একটা বোকা। আমি কেন এ তীব্র গরমে ধীরগতির অধিকারী বৃদ্ধ কচ্ছপের সাথে দ্রুত দৌড়াচ্ছি? যখন কচ্ছপটি আমাকে ধরে ফেলবে তখন আবার দৌড়ানো শুরু করব। তার আগে একটু বিশ্রাম নিয়ে নিই।” এই চিন্তা করে সে একটি ছায়াযুক্ত গাছের নিচে বিশ্রাম নিতে শুয়ে পড়ল। যেহেতু সে একটু ক্লান্ত ছিল, সে দ্রুত ঘুমিয়ে পড়ল। কিন্তু কচ্ছপ ধীর গতিতে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছিল। সে থামেনি কিংবা পিছনের দিকেও তাকায়নি এবং অবশেষে সে গর্বিত খরগোশকে অতিক্রম করল এবং খরগোশের আগেই ভালোভাবে গন্তব্যস্থলে পৌঁছে গেল।
খরগোশ বুঝতেই পারেনি সে কখন ঘুমিয়ে পড়েছিল। সে ধড়মড় করে ঘুম থেকে জেগে উঠল এবং পিছনে কচ্ছপের কোনো পদচিহ্ন দেখতে পেল না। তখনও সে সন্তুষ্টচিত্তে দৌড়াচ্ছিল। কিন্তু শেষ প্রান্তে পৌছানোর পর সে দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতার বিচারক খেঁকশিয়ালের সাথে কচ্ছপকে গল্প করতে দেখল।
তারপর কচ্ছপটি বলল যে বন্ধু তোমার জানা উচিত: “ধীরস্থিররাই জয়ী হয়।”
