Once there lived a poor farmer who worked very hard to maintain his big family. But he could hardly manage two square meals a day. One day while working in the field, he found a basket. He picked it up and carried it home. He showed it to his wife. She opened it. Oh! It was full of huge amount of money.
The wife was greedy by nature. She advised her husband to use it or at least a part of it for themselves. But the farmer told his wife that to use it was nothing but great dishonesty. He added that he would first try to find out the person who had lost the basket.
He set out to find the owner of it. He moved here and there to find him or her. At last the farmer found the owner of the basket. He was an industrialist of the nearby town. He went to him and gave him the basket. Finding the basket, the rich man became very happy. He gave the farmer lots of thanks, but no reward.
Giving back the basket to its owner, the farmer became happy. Then he came back home. The farmer's wife looked at him very angrily and rebuked him for his foolishness. But the farmer did not change his motto and stand. He kept on saying, "Honesty is the best policy."
Some months went away. Suddenly one day the industrialist arrived at his house. Both he and his wife got astonished at this. They tried their level best to entertain him. He praised the farmer highly. Then he gave the farmer a handsome cash reward and gave him some plots of land, then took leave of them. The poor farmer and his wife became very glad at the greatness of the rich man.
Then the farmer called his wife and said to her, "Now have you understood that honesty is the best policy?" The wife felt very ashamed and said, "Really, honesty is the best policy."

সততাই সর্বোৎকৃষ্ট পন্থা
একদা এক গরিব কৃষক বাস করত। সে তার বড় পরিবারের ভরণপোষণের জন্য অনেক বেশি কাজ করত। কিন্তু সে দিনে দুই বেলা খুব কমই খেতে পারত। একদিন মাঠে কাজ করার সময় সে একটি ঝুড়ি দেখতে পেল। সে এটি তুলে নিল এবং বাড়িতে নিয়ে আসল। সে তার স্ত্রীকে এটি দেখাল। সে এটি খুলল। ওহ! এটি বিরাট অংকের টাকায় পরিপূর্ণছিল।
স্ত্রী লোকটি ছিল লোভী প্রকৃতির। সে তার স্বামীকে উপদেশ দিয়েছিল এই টাকাটা অথবা এই টাকার একটি অংশ তাদের জন্য ব্যবহার করতে। কিন্তু কৃষকটি তার স্ত্রীকে বলল এটি ব্যবহার করা অসততা ছাড়া আর কিছুই নয়। সে বলল যে সে প্রথমে চেষ্টা করবে সে লোকটিকে খুঁজে বের করার জন্য যে ঝুড়িটি হারিয়েছিল।
সে ঝুড়ির মালিককে খুঁজতে শুরু করল। সে তাকে খুঁজে বের করার জন্য এখানে সেখানে ঘুরাঘুরি করল। অবশেষে কৃষক ঝুড়ির মালিককে খুঁজে পেল। সে ছিল নিকটবর্তী শহরের একজন শিল্পপতি। সে তার নিকট গেল এবং তাকে ঝুড়িটি দিল। ঝুড়িটি পেয়ে ধনী লোকটি খুব খুশি হল। সে কৃষককে অনেক ধন্যবাদ দিল, কিন্তু কোনো পুরস্কার নয়।
মালিকের কাছে ঝুড়িটি ফিরিয়ে দিয়ে কৃষকটি খুব খুশি হল। তারপর সে বাড়ি ফিরে আসল। কৃষকটির স্ত্রী তার দিকে খুব রাগ করে তাকাল এবং তার বোকামির জন্য তাকে ভর্ৎসনা করল। কিন্তু কৃষকটি তার উদ্দেশ্য পরিবর্তন না করে দাঁড়িয়ে রইল। সে বলতে লাগল, “সততাই সর্বোৎকৃষ্ট পন্থা।”
কয়েক মাস গত হল। হঠাৎ একদিন শিল্পপতি তার বাড়িতে পৌঁছল। সে এবং তার স্ত্রী উভয়েই এতে অবাক হল। তারা তাকে আপ্যায়ন করার জন্য সাধ্যমতো চেষ্টা করল। সে কৃষকটির উচ্চ প্রশংসা করল। তারপর সে কৃষককে প্রচুর নগদ অর্থ পুরস্কার এবং কয়েক খণ্ড জমি দিল এবং চলে গেল। দরিদ্র কৃষক এবং তার স্ত্রী ধনী লোকটির মহানুভবতায় খুব খুশী হয়েছিল।
তারপর কৃষকটি তার স্ত্রীকে ডেকে বলল, “এখন তুমি কী বুঝতে পেরেছ যে সততাই সর্বোৎকৃষ্ট পন্থা?” তার স্ত্রী খুব লজ্জা পেল এবং বলল, “সত্যিই, সততাই সর্বোৎকৃষ্ট পন্থা।”
