May Day
May 1st is International Workers' Day. This day commemorates the historic struggle of working people. The events of May 1, 1886 is a reminder that workers will continue to be exploited until they stand up and speak out to gain better working conditions, better pay and better lives. In Chicago on May 3, 1886 police fired at the workers who were on strike demanding 8 hours working period a day, a minimum wage and safety laws. Since then, May Day has been observed almost all over the world. This day is also observed in Bangladesh in a befitting manner. This is a national holiday. The trade unions and general workers organize seminar, symposium or discussion meetings. They pay homage to the May Day martyrs who laid down their lives for realizing the rights of the working people. The newspapers and journals bring out special supplements highlighting the significance of the day. The BTV & the Radio put up special programs on the occasion. Different labour organizations chalk out elaborate programs to observe the day. People from different walks of life observe May Day and recall the sacrifices of the workers in 1886. We encourage our workers to build the country. We express solidarity and unity with the toiling people of the world.
মে দিবস
১লা মে হচ্ছে আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রমিক দিবস। এই দিনটি শ্রমিকদের ঐতিহাসিক সংগ্রামের স্মৃতি রক্ষা করে। ৩মে ১৮৮৬ সালে শিকাগোতে পুলিশ শ্রমিকদের উপর গুলি বর্ষণ করে যারা ৮ ঘণ্টার কর্মদিবস, নূ্যনতম মজুরি এবং নিরাপত্তা আইন-এসব দাবিতে অবরোধ পালন করছিল। তখন থেকে, প্রায় সমগ্র বিশ্বেই মে দিবস পালন করা হয়। এই দিনটি বাংলাদেশেও যথাযথ মর্যাদায় পালন করা হয়। দিবসটি একটি জাতীয় ছুটির দিন। ট্রেড ইউনিয়নসমূহ এবং সাধারণ শ্রমিকরা আলোচনা সভা, সম্মেলন বা আলোচনা চক্রের আয়োজন করে। তারা মে দিবসে শহীদদের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা প্রদর্শন করে যাঁরা শ্রমিকদের অধিকারের বিষয়টিকে অনুধাবন করে নিজেদের জীবনকে উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন। দিবসটির তাৎপর্যের উপর আলোকপাত করে সংবাদপত্র ও সাময়িকীগুলো বিশেষ ক্রোড়পত্র প্রকাশ করে। বাংলাদেশ টেলিভিশন ও বাংলাদেশ বেতার দিবসটিকে ঘিরে বিশেষ অনুষ্ঠান প্রচার করে থাকে। বিভিন্ন শ্রমজীবি সংগঠন দিনটিকে পালন করার জন্য দিনব্যাপী অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করে। বিভিন্ন শ্রেণি-পেশার মানুষ মে দিবস পালন করে এবং ১৮৮৬ সালে শ্রমিকদের আত্মত্যাগের বিষয়টিকে স্মরণ করে। আমরা আমাদের শ্রমিকদের দেশকে গঠন করার জন্য উৎসাহিত করি। সারাবিশ্বের সকল মেহনতি মানুষের সাথে আমরা সংহতি ও একাত্বতা প্রকাশ করি।
