International Mother Language Day
The 21st February is the Language Martyrs' Day. On this very day in 1952, Barkat, Rafiq, Jabbar, Shafiur and Salam sacrificed their lives for the honour and preservation of their dear mother tongue, Bangla. On 17 November 1999, UNESCO declared this day as International Mother Language Day. Now Ekushey February is being observed as the International Mother Language Day all over the world. The then Pakistani rulers wanted to make 'Urdu' as the state language of Pakistan by force. The people of the then East Pakistan in general, and the students of Dhaka University in particular, protested vigorously against the unjust and autocratic decision of the government. The students violated section 144 and at one stage, they were fired by the Pakistani army. Thus the heroic sons of the soil laid down their invaluable lives with a view to pressing demand for declaring Bangla as the state language of Pakistan. The Pakistani govt. at last yielded to the demand and declared Bangla as the state language of Pakistan. In commemoration of this tremendous sacrifice, and to make this historic day memorable, eventually, the Central Shaheed Minar was constructed. As such, this unforgettable Day has brought national pride, prestige and national integrity for us. Indeed, the 21st February ultimately led to the struggle for Independent Bangladesh.

২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি ভাষা শহীদ দিবস। ১৯৫২ সালের এ দিনে বরকত, রফিক, জব্বার, শফিউর ও সালাম মাতৃভাষা বাংলার সম্মান রক্ষার্থে তাদের জীবন উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন। ১৯৯৯ সালের ১৭ই নভেম্বর ‘ইউনেস্কো’ এ দিনটিকে ‘আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস’ হিসেবে ঘোষণা দিয়েছিল। এখন একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি সারা বিশ্বে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে উদ্যাপিত হয়। তৎকালীন পাকিস্তানী শাসকগোষ্ঠী জোরপূর্বক উর্দুকে পাকিস্তানের রাষ্ট্রভাষা করতে চেয়েছিল। তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের জনগণ বিশেষ করে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্ররা সরকারের এহেন অন্যায় এবং স্বৈরতান্ত্রিক সিদ্ধান্তের তীব্র প্রতিবাদ জানিয়েছিল। ছাত্ররা ১৪৪ ধারা লগুঘন করেছিল এবং এক সময় তারা পাকিস্তান সেনাবাহিনী কর্তৃক গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়েছিল। এভাবে দেশমাতৃকার বীর সন্তানেরা বাংলাকে পাকিস্তানের রাষ্ট্রভাষা ঘোষণার জোর দাবিতে জীবন বিসর্জন দিয়েছিল। অবশেষে পাকিস্তান সরকার দাবি মেনে নিয়ে বাংলাকে পাকিস্তানের রাষ্ট্রভাষা হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে। পরিণতিতে এই মহান আত্মোৎসর্গের স্মরণে এবং দিনটিকে স্মরণীয় করতে শহীদ মিনার তৈরি হয়েছিল। তাই এ অবিস্মরণীয় দিনটি আমাদের জন্য জাতীয় অহংকার, সম্মান ও জাতীয় ঐক্য নিয়ে এসেছে। বস্তুতপক্ষে, একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি পরিশেষে বাংলাদেশকে স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামের পথে এগিয়ে নিয়ে গিয়েছিল।
