Hercules
Hercules is a famous character of antique Greek mythology. He was the son of Jupiter, the king of gods, and Alcmena. He was assigned with some difficult tasks by Eurystheus, the king of Mycenae and his cousin. Those tasks are known as the 'twelve labors of Hercules' in Greek mythology. Eurystheus ordered Hercules to slay a lion and bring him his skin, which disturbed the village of Nemea. Hercules at first fought the lion with weapons but failed and then slayed it just with his hands. His next task was to slay a monster called Hydra. Hydra had nine heads, one of which was immortal. When Hercules attempted to struck off its heads, two new ones erupted. With the help of his servant Ileus, Hercules succeeded in burning eight heads of Hydra and he managed to bury the immortal head under a rock. Hercules became successful in his missions one after another and became a world-famous hero.
হারকিউলিস
হারকিউলিস হচ্ছে প্রাচীন গ্রীক পুরাণের একটি বিখ্যাত চরিত্র। তিনি ছিলেন দেবতাদের রাজা জুপিটার এবং আলকমিনার পুত্র। মাইসিনির রাজা ইউরিসথিউয়াস এবং তার চাচাত ভাই তাকে কিছু কঠিন কাজ করতে বাধ্য করত। গ্রীক পুরাণে এসব কাজ ‘হারকিউলিসের বারোটি শ্রম’ নামে পরিচিত। ইউরিসথিউয়াস হারকিউলিসকে আদেশ করেছিল একটি সিংহকে বধ করে তার চামড়া নিয়ে আসার জন্য যা নিমিয়া গ্রামের অধিবাসীদের বিরক্ত করছিল। হারকিউলিস প্রথমে সিংহের সাথে অস্ত্র নিয়ে যুদ্ধ করেছিল কিন্তু ব্যর্থ হল, পরে এটিকে তার হাত দিয়ে হত্যা করেছিল। তার পরবর্তী কাজ ছিল হাইড্রা নামক দৈত্যকে হত্যা করা। হাইড্রার ছিল নয়টি মাথা, যার একটি ছিল অমরণশীল। হারকিউলিস যখন তার মাথায় আঘাত করার চেষ্টা করে, তার দুইটি নতুন মাথা গজায়। তার ভৃত্য ইয়োলাসের সহযোগিতায় হারকিউলিস হাইড্রার আটটি মাথা পুড়িয়ে ফেলতে এবং অমরণশীল মাথাটি একটি পাহাড়ে পুঁততে সমর্থ হয়েছিল। হারকিউলিস তার মিশনে একের পর এক সফলতা লাভ করে পৃথিবীর একজন বিখ্যাত বীরপুরুষ হওয়ার খ্যাতি অর্জন করেন।
