The Significance of the 7th March Speech
The 7th March 1971 is a memorable day in the history of the Bengali nation. On this day Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of the nation, gave a historical speech that directed the whole nation in those days of turmoil and unrest. The West Pakistanis had been exploiting the Bengalis since the emergence of the state Pakistan in 1947. The Bengalis were deprived in economic, political and cultural life. After 24 years of treachery and discrimination, the Bengali nationalist party Awami League won the parliamentary election. But the rulers decided not to let them form the government of the country. It infuriated the entire Bengali nation. Amid anger and protest, Bangabandhu gave this epoch-making speech at the Race Course Maidan on the 7th March. He said it was the time of struggle for emancipation and independence, and the nation must fight for that mission. He called the nation for not cooperating with the Pakistanis, for not giving them taxes, and for not attending offices. Bangabandhu's speech worked as a big inspiration for the nation. ১৯৭১ সালের ৭ই মার্চ বাঙালি জাতির ইতিহাসে একটি স্মরণীয় দিন। এদিন জাতির প্রতিষ্ঠাতা পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান এক ঐতিহাসিক ভাষণ দেন যা বিশৃগুখলা ও অস্থিতিশীলতার সেই দিনগুলোতে পুরো জাতিকে দিকনির্দেশনা দান করে। ১৯৪৭ সালে পাকিস্তান রাষ্ট্র আবির্ভূত হওয়ার পর থেকে পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানিরা বাঙালিদের শোষণ করে আসছিল। বাঙালিরা অর্থনৈতিক রাজনৈতিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক জীবনে ছিল বঞ্চনার শিকার। ২৪ বছরের বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা ও বৈষম্যের পর বাঙালি জাতীয়তাবাদী দল আওয়ামী লীগ সংসদ নির্বাচনে জয়লাভ করে। কিন্তু শাসকগোষ্ঠী তাদেরকে দেশের সরকার গঠনের সুযোগ না দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়। এটি সমগ্র বাঙালি জাতিকে ক্ষিপ্ত করে তোলে। প্রচন্ড রাগ ও প্রতিবাদের মাঝে ৭ই মার্চ তারিখে রেসকোর্স ময়দানে বঙ্গবন্ধু এই যুগান্তকারী ভাষণ দেন। তিনি বলেন যে এবার শৃগুখলমুক্তি ও স্বাধীনতার জন্য সংগ্রাম করার সময় এসেছে, আর জাতিকে সেই লক্ষ্যে অবশ্যই সংগ্রাম করতে হবে। তিনি জাতিকে পাকিস্তানিদের সাথে সহযোগিতা না করার, তাদেরকে কর না দেওয়ার, এবং কর্মক্ষেত্রে উপস্থিত না হওয়ার জন্য আহবান জানান। বঙ্গবন্ধুর ভাষণ জাতির জন্য বড় অনুপ্রেরণা হিসেবে কাজ করেছিল। এটি আমাদের মাতৃভূমির স্বাধীনতার জন্য জীবন উৎসর্গ করতে মানুষকে উদ্বুদ্ধ করেছিল। এভাবে জাতীয় ইতিহাসে বঙ্গবন্ধুর ৭ই মার্চের ভাষণ অমরত্ব লাভ করেছে।
