The River Buriganga
The Buriganga is a famous river flowing by Dhaka, the capital city of the country. This river had a glorious past. It was a tributary of the mighty Ganges and flowed into the Bay of Bengal through the Dhaleshwari. Gradually it lost its link with the Ganges and got the name Buriganga. The Mughals marveled at its tide level and founded their provincial capital Jahangirnagar on its banks in 1610. Once the river supplied drinking water and supported trade and commerce. Later Jahangirnagar grew into a heavily populated city under its new name 'Dhaka'. Now the Buriganga is a polluted and dying river. Huge quantities of toxic chemicals and wastes from mills and factories, hospitals and residential buildings are dumped into its water everyday. The situation is so disastrous that it seems we have killed one of our rivers. Steps must be taken to save our other rivers from such death. Otherwise we shall have to cry for our other rivers as we do for our beloved Buriganga.
বুড়িগঙ্গা নদী
বুড়িগঙ্গা একটি বিখ্যাত নদী যা দেশের রাজধানী শহর ঢাকার পাশ দিয়ে বয়ে গিয়েছে। এই নদীর রয়েছে চমৎকার অতীত। এক সময় এটি প্রমত্তা গঙ্গার শাখানদী ছিল এবং ধলেশ্বরী নদীর মাধ্যমে বঙ্গোপসাগরে প্রবাহিত হতো। ধীরে ধীরে এটি গঙ্গা নদীর সাথে সংযোগ হারিয়ে ফেলে এবং বুড়িগঙ্গা নাম ধারণ করে। মুঘলরা বুড়িগঙ্গার জোয়ার ভাটার উচ্চতায় বিস্মিত হন এবং ১৬১০ সালে জাহাঙ্গীরনগরে তাদের প্রাদেশিক রাজধানী প্রতিষ্ঠিত করেন। একসময় নদীটি খাবার পানি সরবরাহ এবং ব্যবসা বাণিজ্যে সহায়তা করত। পরবর্তীতে জাহাঙ্গীরনগর ‘ঢাকা’ নাম ধারণ করে এবং মাত্রাতিরিক্ত জনবহুল শহরে পরিণত হয়। বর্তমানে বুড়িগঙ্গা একটি দূষিত এবং মৃতপ্রায় নদী। বিপুল পরিমাণ বিষাক্ত পদার্থ, কলকারখানা, হাসপাতাল এবং বসতবাড়ির বর্জ্য এতে ফেলা হয়। অবস্থা এতটাই ভয়ংকর যেন আমরা আমাদের একটি নদীকে হত্যা করেছি। এ ধরনের মৃত্যুর হাত থেকে আমাদের অন্য নদীগুলোকে বাঁচাতে অবশ্যই পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করতে হবে। অন্যথায় আমাদের অন্য নদীসমূহের জন্য আমাদের কাঁদতে হবে যেমনটা কাঁদি আমাদের বুড়িগঙ্গার জন্য।
