THE INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY

February 21 is the international Mother Language Day which is observed all over the world. The day is historically related to Bangladesh. Once the Indian subcontinent belonged to the British rule. In 1947, the subcontinent was divided into India and Pakistan. Pakistan had two parts. One was East Pakistan and the other was West Pakistan. But the people of East Pakistan were oppressed by the government. Even they wanted to snatch away the mother tongue of the people of the East Pakistan. Mohammad Ali Zinnah, declared, "Urdu, and Urdu will be the state language of the Pakistan." But the Benglees protested against this claim strongly. All the students of Dhaka University brought out a procession violating 144 imposed by the government. The day was 21 February, 1952. The police fired openly on the students. Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, Jabbar etc. sacrificed their lives for the sake of their mother tongue. Now, the day is observed with due respect and solemnity to the martyred heroic sons of this country. The day is a public holiday all over the world. In our country people from all walks of life offer floral wreaths at the foot of Shaheed Minar. They sing the mournful song Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano........Pari. Various cultural organizations arrange different programmes highlighting the heroic deed of martyred sons of the soil. Radio, TV air special programms on this occasion. National dailies also bring out special supplements on this day. However, UNESCO in recognition of the sacrifices of the martyrs for the rightful place of Bangla, proclaimed February 21 as the International Mother Language Day to be observed all over the world. The day is annually observed to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
